2008.10.24. STICKS AND CELLS PHONES

For Suzanne's assignment we drew bold, abstracted drawings of our cell phones, a sticks and a combination of both.  I really liked this assignment- one because you really pulled out creativity to come up with enough *different* drawings.  I also like the bold look of the finished product.


2009.10.23. DIALOG QUESTIONS

How is dialog created?
I created a business dialog.  I made the spaces of equal size at two different levels such as an employer talking to an employee.  One 'person' or space is more closed off by skewers and the other is more open.  I think this made the spaces similar but not the same and added to the dialog by differing the two spaces.
How is a sense of space/place defined?
A sense of space is defined in my project through continuation of the surrounding shapes.  I made the empty space to the same scale as the surrounding parts therefore making them in proportion and giving them more presence.  By doing this I used relative scale to define the importance and number of spaces.
How is the idea of system generated?
This question reminds me of a quote from our unity project; "The sum of the parts is greater than the whole."  A system works together and I accomplished that by continuing a L shaped form and making my structure made so that it would not work if one of the spaces or pieces were missing.
How does the joinery support the project concept/strategies?
My projects could not work if certain joints did not exsist.  I incorperated my joints into my project.  It is not just a system of sticking something together- it is a part of my project and adds to the asthetics.
How is scale utilized in the project?
Scale is utilized in my project by making my spaces in relative scale to my structure.  I also made the height of my project relate to the length of my skewers.  
How do two-dimensional images add to the understanding of the project?
The two dimensional drawings show perspectives and make you look at your project from different angles.  I did a perspective drawing as well as my plan and elevations because it told more about my project.  
How did the initial project idea evolve?
My project changed alot.  This is the most simplistic project I have done so far. I made sure that the concept didn't get in the way of the development of my project. Through trial and error I found out what structurally worked and what didn't. From there I evolved my project to project a stronger message and clearer dialog.  I will have process picture posted to further explain how my process evolved.

My first iteration for the Dialog project.  I had trouble creating two spaces.  Alot of my ideas turned out with three spaces.

2008.10.13. DIALOG JOINTS



Our weekend assignment was to make models of the joints used in our DIALOG project to the highest craft.  This is my final product.  The most common joint in the one used on the right.  

The edges of the paper are neatly glued together to create a seamless joint.  I also interlace my skewers which makes a space within my project.  The skewers are evenly spaced and neatly glued to a folded piece of 4'x6' bristol board.

My first idea started with the concept of DNA.  You can see part of my process in the sketch above.  Through trial and error I figured out that this structure was both too literal and not sturdy enough.  I still liked the spiral effect as well as the curved pieces.  The next thing I tried was making a module using two paper pieces in the spiral curved shape and attaching them horisontally with two skewers.  I would then repeat this module by stacking five more on top of that and rotating them sixty degrees each new module so that together the modules spiraled.  What bothered me about this iteration was that the peaks of the paper pieces did not line up with the skewers therefore did not look unified enough for me.
To fix this i tried making the module longer by using four peices in each and all together hiding the sticks.  This caused me to only have three stacks and it did not look strong enough and did not spiral enough with only three.


I finally concluded at the spirally shape in the picture above.  I evenly folded creases in the paper and when connecting the tubes I lined up the creases in the paper.  I spiralled the tubes up and down and made the skewers the support for m structure.  I evenly  and neatly glued the skewers to the tube pieces parallel to the table surface.  I also tried to make them parallel to eachother.  I used one skewer in each tube piece.

2009.10.06. UNITY PROJECT COMPARE AND CONTRAST




For the  U n i t y  project, i decided to create a spiral structure.  I originally got my inspiration from a DNA structure and went from there.  My project corresponded with Gregory's project.  Both of our projects had a spiraling  effect going in a vertical direction.  This is why I chose Gregory's project to compare and contrast for our latest blog entry.
While Gregory had two skewers connected to each piece of Bristol Board I had twelve paper pieces with one skewer connected to each.  Another thing that Gregory and I both did on our project was folding.  I folding mine for a visual texture as well as a way to incorporate continuity because of the way the lines met up. Gregory folded his for structural purposes.  I folded mine in fourths and he folded his in half. 
Another difference between our projects was his base.  He had three pieces of Bristol Board as a base.  I did not use a base.  My sticks created my base.  
Our projects were different because our skewers heights.  My skewer heights remained the same because they were to be even with the table.   His relayed the different heights of his paper forms by varying the heights of his skewers as well.
Although our projects both had a common theme of the spirals we took a very different take even though we were bound to the same materials (12 skewers and 12 4''x6'' pieces of Bristol Board)
