 This is my concept of the twelve twigs assignment.  I created twelve rolls in a systematic way made up of pages from a book.  Once I got to this point Tommy and I talked about the meaning of the text on the book pages.  

Therefore when I moved on to creating the red datum I decided to type out the seventeen words (box, enclosure, paddock, system, sty etc.) on a red background.  The technique I used to create my datum was found through a 'mistake' during my trail and error process.  I evenly lay down hot glue in a specific shape onto the desired paper-in this case the seventeen words on a red background.  Once the hot glue dries I peel it up.  The neat thing about this process is that you pull up the background along with the glue and you can see it through the now hardened hot glue.  I thought this incorporated my binding agent as well as making a aesthetically pleasing datum.  

My twigs are placed inside of the paper rolls.  I arranged them in a way that my curvy twigs curves towards the centerline of my project.  I placed the sturdier, straighter sticks in the middle, with the tallest in the center.

  If you look closely at my project(click on the picture to enlarge) you can see that I chose to arrange the rolls so that it alternated between the text being right-side up and upside down.  I did this because when they were all arranged right-side up youre eye skimmed over the project, just like a book.  When I alternated them it occupied your eyes more and made you pay more attention to the structure.  

I steered away from my original idea of using magazine pages versus the text pages because I think that the text makes a more powerful statement and goes well with my green twigs and red datum.

The first photo is of my original graphic(before I added color)  I had planned on using six magazine rolls on each side to make a cubic structure.

After thinking about this more I thought the cube figure was really generic and that a triangular one may be more powerful.  Also comparing the structure to my twigs I realized how horribly out of proportion this big of a structure would be.

The second photo are different triangular shaped bases I was thinking about building on.

Also you can tell from this picture that I replaced my magazine rolls with text rolls-the black and white was much much better.  I thought it carried a stronger message and contrasted my green twigs really nicely.

You'll also notice the whole triangular shape eventually went out the window as well.

In the top left corner of this last photo you can see a triangular structure I made from the magazine rolls while I was brainstorming.  You can also see one of my twigs on the right top corner of my cutting mat.  The rolls in the bottom right corner are the text rolls I replaced the magazine rolls with.  On the left hand side of the picture there are twig shapes.  These twig shapes are actually made from putting hot glue onto magazine pages in the shapes of twigs and then after the hot glue dries pulling it up off the paper- in turn taking the background and color with the hot glue.  I discovered this method by mistake but I thought it was really cool afterwards are REALLY wanted to use this technique in my project.  I didn't end up using these hot glue twigs but I did incorporate this technique-WITHOUT it being overwhelming and unnecessary.  You'll have to look at my final twelve twigs post to see how :)

2008.09.17. INTERUM CRITIQUE-12TWIGS

Today was our interim critique for our twelve twigs project. I think by the end everyone got a lot of good feedback. Whether you came in thinking your idea was powerful and you were proud of your project or if you came in kind of hiding your project behind someone else’s and not wanting to stand up and introduce it- We all left with changes to make and things to think about. 

The most common issue for the projects over all was defiantly the craftsmanship…apparently not everybody got something from the reading we has assigned to us this week-on craftsmanship!- A lot of us need to work on making cleaner cuts and just all around making our projects more presentable. I think we need to use good craftsmanship whether on our first attempt or our five hundredth attempt. It is a huge reflection on our work and how much we put into it. Like Tommy said during class- If we don’t care, they don’t care.

Another issue that was brought up a lot was relativity. Our projects need to relate back to the concept in which it came from. Each of our projects should have an obvious focus. Our focus should be thought out; the emphasis still on our twelve twigs. Another thing that really stuck with me from class today was variety reduction. We always talk about simplifying our concepts and I think that this is really important to do so that your idea is portrayed clearly and you don’t feel the need to defend your project. Also I noticed that a lot of people still had not incorporated their binding agents into their design. They simply had glue or whatever but it wasn’t of any significance other than being used as an adhesive.

These are just a few ideas of the things we all have to think about and relate to our individual projects over the weekend.
