Today in Studio Theory Hour there was a guest speaker, John Lynn, who came to talk about sustainability and its importance. I found Lynn to be very passionate and informative. He introduced his ideas in a way that really got the audience thinking. He made us think about sustainability from different views. His approach was really captivating.
John Lynn introduced sustainability as an issue that related to all of us and needs to be brought to everyone’s attention. He said that there were no individual parts in the universe; all parts make up a whole. He told us that being architects we need to be more respectful in the way we approach sustainability. He talked about the impact that humans have on the environment good and bad. He related us to a storm. This was interesting because he explained about how while a storm destroys a place it is also creating the entire time. The point that really stuck with me was the topic of rebuilding versus changing the way we build in the first place and reusing structures
He also talked a lot about 2030, the approach on sustainability practices in architecture. The carbon footprint of the resources used in architecture will be reduced by fifty percent. It is a serious issue that architects have committed to give deep thought to when creating new structures. The 2030 challenge has been adopted by AIA. [www.sustainability 2030.com.]
One thing I really liked about this presentation was that our guest speaker was very passionate about what he preached. He seemed like he honestly just wanted to get the message across and I think it defiantly got across to me.
