Coming Full cirlce

[Community] The Interior Architeture program, specifically first year, is a community within itself and studio class has taught me a lot about community. Collaboration and communication are key to successful work. We all work off of one another and work with each other to help each other build, progress and to grow into amazing designers. Studio wouldn’t be the same if we did not have such a tight knit group. We all learn from one another passing on ideas, developing them and progressing off of feedback.  We have all been through the same critiques, same long all nighters in studio; the same challenges. Having a community is a responsibility in a way, the same as how stewardship is a responsibility to all on earth.

[Stewardship]: Today in theory of design we discussed sustainability within design. Sustainable design is much like stewardship. Sustainability is all about giving back to the earth; not depleting what the earth has to offer us. This semester I took Biology 105 and have learned a lot about stewardship outside of design.  I learned about global warming and the tragic depletion of the earth.  Patrick has said that his motto for his studio class is work smarter, not harder and in Biology I learned that a spider, using only room temperature water spins a web with its own resources that is ounce for ounce stronger than our strongest material; which take a lot of energy and money to make.

[Authenticity]: Authenticity has been majorly emphasized throughout both semesters. Suzanne has continually stated how important it is to have your own style, thoughts and ideas. To make your designs, and your drawings convey who you are, your personality. Authenticity also has everything to do with innovations. Designers that have developed the most lasting innovations are those that are authentic and have a good sense of design.

[Innovation]: Innovative design and the exploration of new ideas inspires me everyday. Coming to the end of the year, we had our very last studio critique today and we presented out sacred space models and boards. The projects that stood out the most were those that were the most innovative, and creative. and truly focused on creating a space specifically for the grad students and creating a story.

[Summary] We have talked a lot in Patricks class about design present and past and wether we need to change or revive old styles.  I think innovative change is the key to new design and I believe we need change especially in order to become a stronger community and follow through with stewardship.
